RELEASE Erickson Appointed to Special Property Tax Reform Committee Harrisburg – State Sen. Ted Erickson (R-26) has been appointed to the Senate panel responsible for considering legislation introduced during the General Assembly's Special Session on Property Tax Reform. Senator Erickson was appointed to the Committee on Legislation by Senate President Pro Tempore Robert Jubelirer. "I am honored to be appointed to the committee heading the extremely important effort to lower property taxes and give taxpayers greater control over the mix of taxes they pay," said Erickson. "I've been actively involved in property tax reform discussions since the Special Session was formed late last year, and this appointment will give me even more insight." The Senate approved a comprehensive property tax reform sponsored by Senator Erickson that would allow voters to decide whether to reduce school property taxes by raising local earned income taxes. Under Senate Bill 30, the minimum property tax reduction offered would be at least 35 percent of the maximum homestead exclusion, and homeowners could see tax relief in 2006. In addition, the legislation establishes a statewide "backend referendum" requirement for school districts wanting to increase tax rates that go beyond the inflation rate. The bill would also double the size of Pennsylvania's popular Property Tax and Rent Rebate Program – increasing payments by $131 million and enabling 281,000 additional low income seniors to receive tax relief. Other property tax reform plans are also being considered. The Senate, House of Representatives and Governor's Office are trying to reach consensus on a final plan. CONTACT: Tom Golden |
