Erickson Announces Results of Constituent Survey

More than 3,000 responses on issues such as property taxes, smoking bans, mass transit and gun control.

Harrisburg – State Sen. Ted Erickson (R-26) today released the results of a Constituent Survey that allowed citizens in Delaware and Chester counties to make their views known on issues such as property taxes, smoking bans, mass transit and gun control.

"These surveys are a great way to get feedback on detailed issues and proposals," said Erickson. "Of course, I speak to constituents year-round and have a good idea of what's on their minds. But surveys allow me to get more detailed feedback on the top issues facing the 26th Senatorial District."

More than 3,000 citizens took the survey, either through the mail or online. The survey and results are posted at Senator Erickson's web site, www.senatorerickson.com

On the issue of property taxes, constituents were asked: "If given the opportunity, would you vote to increase the state sales tax by 1 percent and the state income tax by .43 percent in order to reduce real estate property taxes?" The results were: 46 percent "no," 38 percent "yes," and 16 percent "undecided."

Regarding gun control, 76 percent support a limiting the sale of handguns in Pennsylvania to one per month. However, only 32 percent believe it would result in a reduction of handgun violence in Pennsylvania.

Other results from the survey included:

  • A large majority (70 percent) support placing a cap on increasing state spending by limiting increases to within the rate of inflation.
  • When asked if the Commonwealth should divert funding for roads and bridges to help pay for mass transit, 48 percent said "no" and 35 percent said "yes."
  • Seventy-five percent support totally prohibiting smoking in public places, such as restaurants, taverns or bars, retail stores, theatres and arenas.
  • Nearly half of respondents would support a ban on the use of all cell phones while driving, while 40 percent would prohibit only handheld cell phones.
  • Seventy-five percent support legislation mandating the tracking of convicted child sex offenders by Global Positioning Satellite (GPS).

"I'd like to thank the more than 3,000 people who took the time to return the survey or fill it out on my website," said Erickson. "I also received many comments, suggestions and commentary - which are helpful to me."
