Sen. Erickson: Applications Available for Property Tax/Rent Rebates

New law expands coverage to 422,000 additional Pennsylvanians.

Harrisburg – Applications are now available for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program, the newly expanded program that helps older Pennsylvanians pay for property taxes and rent, state Sen. Ted Erickson (R-26) said today.

Erickson said eligible program participants can receive a rebate of up to $650 based on their property taxes or rent paid during 2006.  The program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older; widows and widowers age 50 and older; and people with disabilities age 18 and older.

"The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program helps older Pennsylvanians meet the costs of property taxes and rent. Legislation passed last year expanded the income limits to allow more people to qualify. If you haven't signed up before, or if you weren't eligible, I urge you to look into the expanded program," said Erickson.  "Our district office can provide applications as well as assistance in completing the application."

The new law increases the income limit from $15,000 to $35,000 for homeowners (excluding one-half of Social Security Income and Railroad Retirement Tier 1 benefits) and boosts the maximum rebate for both homeowners and renters from $500 to $650.

Applications, as well as assistance in applying for the rebate, are available through Senator Erickson's district office at 5037 Township Line Road in Drexel Hill (610-853-4100). Applications and information can also be obtained through the state Department of Revenue's web site, www.revenue.state.pa.us, or by calling toll-free 1-888-PATAXES.
